Green Spring Readies for 8th Annual Seed Swap
Green Spring Gardens and Washington Gardener are co-hosting the 8th Annual Washington Gardener Magazine Seed Exchange on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Green Spring Gardens. The seed swap runs from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and includes lectures, planting tips, door prizes, face-to-face seed swaps and a goody bag for attendees.
The cost for the entire program is $15. There is a $5 discount for members of the Friends of Green Spring and Washington Gardener magazine subscribers.
Call 703-642-5173 to register for the program. Officials say attendance is limited to 100 people and that they do expect a sellout.
Green Spring Gardens is located at 4603 Green Spring Road in Alexandria, Va.
Attendees do not have to bring seeds in order to attend the program. If you do attend with seeds, program organizers suggest bringing the seeds packaged in resealable plastic zipper or wax sandwich bags. About 20 seeds per bag works well, with a few more added for smaller seeds and a smaller number for larger seeds. Label the bags with a white sticker containing the information you know about the seeds, such as their common and scientific names, soil-sun-and-watering needs, and where you obtained the seed. Commercial seed packs are fine to bring along, too.
Staff will collect the seed packets and assign random numbers to attendees as they arrive, and the seeds will be placed at tables according to categories such as native, edible, herbs, exotics, annuals, perennials, and wood stems. After a set time for previewing the seeds, attendees will be called by number to select a seed packet. After that initial seed swap, attendees will be free to exchange or share any of the seeds they have.
Washington Gardener is asking those coming to the swap to be green by bringing along a personal water bottle as well as used or new garden books and seed catalogs to exchange and share.
