Grand Prix of Baltimore Presented by SRT to Diversify Race Offerings

Sports Cars to Play More Prominent Role in 2013 as Organizers Include

IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge on Event Schedule

BALTIMORE (Feb. 26, 2013) – Organizers of the Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT today announced the 2013 event will for the first time showcase the largest single-make series in North America, the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama.

The GT3 Cup Challenge is one of three official development series sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). Featuring semi-professional drivers competing in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, the series will run two races in Baltimore over Labor Day weekend.

The GT3 Cup Challenge events will complement the Grand Prix of Baltimore’s two feature races: The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) presented by Tequila Patrón will run on Saturday, Aug. 31, and the IZOD IndyCar Series will run on Sunday, Sept. 1.

IZOD IndyCar’s development series, Firestone Indy Lights, also will run at the 2013 Grand Prix of Baltimore. As in 2012, the Firestone Indy Lights race will be held on Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

The Grand Prix of Baltimore is the first-ever appearance by the GT3 Cup Challenge at a street course event. The series’ two car classes – Platinum and Gold also featuring a Master’s Championship for drivers over the age of 45 – will run simultaneously in each of two races, one on Saturday, Aug. 31 and one on Sunday, Sept. 1.

“We’re pleased to bring the GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama to the streets of Baltimore in what will be a first-of-its-kind race for many of the series’ drivers,” said Grand Prix of Baltimore General Manager Tim Mayer. “The inclusion of the GT3 Cup Challenge to our schedule ensures fans will enjoy a broad range of racing that features a healthy dose of both open-wheel and sports car action.”

”IMSA along with primary partners Porsche Motorsport North America and Yokohama are very excited to bring our iconic GT3 Cup Development Series to the high-profile Grand Prix of Baltimore venue,” said IMSA Development Series Director Steven Sewell. “Racing on a temporary race circuit through downtown city streets represents a unique challenge for our diverse field of up-and-coming sports car talent and wily veteran semi-professionals. This mix is guaranteed to add some additional excitement for the great fans in Baltimore.”
